Hello! I'm looking to hang a wooden cabinet on a basement wall that is made out of thin masonite paneling.

There is nothing behind the paneling, such as wooden beams, to grab on to, and when this cabinet is filled, it will probably weigh about 40 pounds. Since it will be filled with my autographed baseball collection, I don't want it falling off the wall! Any suggestions?? Thanks very much!

Wall Candle Holder - Real or Electric

I have a cousin who lives outside of Denver, Colorado. A few weeks ago, he called me to get some information on my opinion of different types of wall candle holders for his log cabin home in the Rocky Mountains.

He was remodeling his living room and den. Because of the rustic theme of his log cabin home, he was asking me for ideas or suggestions on what might fit into the decor of these two rooms.

I told him for me to really help him in his search for the perfect wall candle holders, I would have to take the trip out to his home and have a look at what each of these rooms has in them. This way I could make an informed decision on the types of wall candle holders that would match up with the theme of each of these two rooms. Besides, I haven’t been out there for a visit in quite some time and I was eager to visit with him and enjoy the beautiful Colorado Rockies.

A few days later I had booked a flight to Denver and rented a car.

It was a Saturday morning when I pulled into his driveway. Before I left for the trip to Colorado, I jotted down a few questions on a notebook that I wanted to ask my cousin once I got to his house. These questions are basic wall candle holder questions on what type of wall candle holders he might be looking for.

The first question I asked was if he was looking for wall candle holders to hold real candles or was he looking for electric wall candle holders. Electric wall candle holders are actually electric lights with bulbs that are in the shape of a candle flame.

He told me that he was open to installing both real candle holders and electric wall candle holders. He informed me that two of the wall candle holders, being installed in the den, will be hard wired to the wiring already in the wall, but in the living room he would like to install wall candle holders that use real candles for light. This way he could use scented candles to freshen up the room.

The next thing we did was to walk into the living room and see what types of furnishings are in the room. Sometimes the smaller accents of a room’s furnishings are more compatible with wall lighting fixtures than the larger more pronounced pieces of furniture in the room.

This was a large living room. He had two large oak framed chairs and a large couch that matched. Large deep cushions filled out both the chairs and the couch. Earth tone stripes crisscrossed was the pattern of the covers for the both the chairs and couch. Also in the room are two recliners. One of the recliners is black leather and the other is micro fiber in a beautiful royal blue.

The log walls in the room gave the room a rustic feel and the stone fireplace going up the wall was the focal point of the room. The floor was a plush pile carpet in a medium brown.

I couldn’t help but notice that bronze accents were all about the room. On one wall was a bronze wall sculpture of several elk. On another wall was a large bronze metal wall art sun.

It was on the wall with the large bronze sun that he wanted to hang a wall candle holder on each side of this metal wall art. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I suggested that he should go with an open wall sconce candle holder made of wood. Something that would hold a pillar candle at least four inched in diameter and eight to ten inches tall.

The second set of wall candle holders were to be hung on the wall directly above the stone mantle of the fireplace. Here I noticed that he had wrought iron fireplace tools on a stand over to the left of the fireplace. He also had a wrought iron screen placed directly in front of the open fireplace. It was so obvious that wrought iron wall candle holders would be the perfect match for the wall above the fireplace mantle. He agreed.

So now we moved on to the den. This was a magnificent room. The floors are hardwood floors. As with all the walls in this home, they are all log walls. What struck my attention was a gray stone two sided fireplace going straight up through the ceiling, separating the den from the study. The furniture in this room was all black leather. There are five chairs, a couch and a love seat. There are also two coffee tables and five end tables. The table tops are made of black smoked glass and the framework supporting the glass was pewter.

On one wall was hanging a medium size tapestry of a mountain lake. On another wall was a large wooden wall clock about five feet in diameter. He told me that he intended to install a wall candle holder on each side of the tapestry and another set of wall candle holders on each side of the wall clock.

After looking around the room and contemplating for a while, I came to the conclusion that a wrought iron candle holder on each side of the tapestry would be the perfect solution. He liked the idea and decided to go with battery powered candle lamps.

The large wall clock already had two rather ugly hard wired wall lights on each side. He said that these two wall lamps have been an eye sore to him for quite some time. He just never got around to changing them out to something more attractive. That is when I suggested that electric pewter wall candle lanterns would improve the overall look of the room. He said that wall candle lanterns had never crossed his mind, but it was a good idea and he would make the change.

My cousin wrote down all of my suggestions. I gave him a great website that had all the information he would need to explore all the suggestions I made. Within a month my cousin had ordered all his new candle wall lighting fixtures and had them up and working brilliantly.

Wall candle holders are a small touch that has a large effect on the overall persona of a room. With a little thought to the theme of any room, these charming additions will bring out the artful creativity and personal satisfaction you are looking for…

What color ottoman would look nice with my cream leather living room suit?

Hey! I need help on deciding the color ottoman that would look nice with my furniture. My living room furniture is cream and leather. I was thinking maybe a dark brown ottoman. Also, should I go with leather or should I choose some type to fabric?

for a warmer feel go for a dark to medium brown, for a calm feel go with a light or dark blue! thats what i did!! i would go with leather its a little more expensive but a lot easier to clean for sure!!! if you have animals then fabric something comfy!!!

Character of hangings and furniture-covering for a given room

In a measure, the materials for hangings and furniture-coverings are determined more or less by the amount one wishes to spend in this direction. In England, slip-covers of chintz appear, also, in formal rooms; but are removed when the owner is entertaining. If the permanent upholstery is of chintz, then at once your room becomes informal. If you are planning the living-room for a small house or apartment, which must serve as reception-room during the winter months, far more dignity, and some elegance can be obtained for the same expenditure, by using plain velveteen, modern silk brocades in one color, or some of the modern reps to be had in very smart shades of all colors.

The fashion for cretonne and chintz has led to their indiscriminate use by professionals as well as amateurs, and this craze has caused a prejudice against them. Chintz used with judgment can be most attractive.In America the term chintz includes cretonne and stamped linen. If you are planning for them, put together, for consideration, all your bright colored chintz, and in quite another part of your room, or decorator's shop, the chintz of dull, faded colors, as they require different treatment.

Architectural Glass Doors for the Home

Architectural glass is glass used as a structural element, as opposed to merely decorative or inserted in hole in the wall for the sole purpose of providing light and a way to see out. Thus architectural glass doors are doors wherein the glass is an integral structural element of the door.

There are many options when choosing glass for your architectural glass doors, although it may be wise to choose from safety glass types, which include toughened, reinforced and laminated glasses.

Crown glass is the earliest style of glass window. It consisted of hot blown glass forced onto a round, flat sheet and cut to size. It was a very expensive mode of manufacture and could not be used to make large panes.

It is not ideal for architectural glass applications, as it is not particularly strong compared to newer glass technologies. Also, it is expensive.

It is still used for restoring old buildings, however, as it has a unique look that cannot be obtained through any other process.

Glass blocks or glass bricks are often used as architectural glass in building walls and partitions, but aren't ideal for doors as they tend to be very thick and very heavy. They could be used for doors, but this application is rare.

To make rolled plate glass, large ladlefuls of molten glass are thrown on the cast iron bed of a rolling table, and rolled like dough. It is then trimmed roughly while hot and soft.

Figure rolled glass results when the plate is cast between two rollers, one of which carries a pattern. The resulting pattern will appear in high relief.

It is usually whiter than clear glasses and can be laminated or toughened to produce a safety glass suitable for architectural glass doors. This may be an option if you want to combine strength with decorative properties, and a whiter, more opaque color for the sake of privacy.

90 percent of the world's flat glass is float glass. Molten glass is poured onto one end of a molten tin bath. The glass floats on the tin, and levels out as it spreads along the bath. The result is that the glass will be smooth on both sides.

The glass cools slowly and solidifies as it travels over the molten tin. A very small amount of tin becomes embedded on the side facing the tin, and this side is easier to make into a mirror.

Molten glass floating on tin will normally spread out to a thickness of about 6mm. It is made thinner by stretching it as it cools, and thicker by squashing it as it cools.

Laminated glass is a safety glass that holds together when shattered. It is held in place by a layer wedged between layers of glass that prevents the glass from breaking into large, sharp dangerous pieces.

It is often used in architectural applications. As an added bonus, it insulates better aginast sound and blocks 99 percent of ultraviolet light. When choosing glass for architectural glass doors, there are many viable options, but strongly consider laminated glass for its safety features.

Anyone know any good office pranks?

We're having an office war. We're all friends, so nothing horrible. Here's what I did so far:
1) Got a wireless doorbell ringer and hid it in tiles over coworkers desk. Ring every now and then.
2) Buy a bunch of cheap, crappy smelling air fresheners and hide them everywhere in the office.

Put balls of chewing gum between the lift doors and at eye and mouth level.

Wireless Doorbell: is it Right for Your Home?

The Wireless Doorbell has proven to be a great tool for many homeowners.  Although it is a relatively new invention, it has had a dramatic effect on the doorbell industry.  Many homeowners have wrestled with the decision of whether to add it to their home.  Here is a list of some of its advantages and disadvantages:

1.  No wires makes for easy installation and portability.

A wireless doorbell does not have wires.  This means installation is as simple as removing the old wired doorbell and putting in the batteries to the wireless doorbell.  Also, no wires means the wireless doorbell can be moved on a whim.  This can be very helpful when undergoing remodeling projects or trying to find a better range strength.

2.  Wireless Doorbells are more versatile than Wired Doorbells.

Wireless Doorbells work great in places where wired doorbells are not allowed or cannot work.  Not surprisingly, wireless doorbells are a hit with apartment and those who live in leased homes.  This is because they get a quality doorbell that they can keep in compliance with the landlord and even take the doorbell with them when they move.  This is great versatility.  Also, wireless doorbells work in homes that can’t use regular wiring for a wired doorbell. 

3.  Range Limits are expanding to even larger limits.

One knock on early wireless doorbells were their limited ranges.  However, this issue has been addressed by more powerful transmitters.  Regular versions of wireless doorbells will be adequate for most homes.  However, for homes that are multi-floored or are simply quite large, long range wireless doorbells have been made.  These doorbells have ranges that extend well beyond the basic regular range and provide quality sound as well.

4.  Competitively priced compared to wired doorbell systems.

One of the most compelling benefits of a wireless doorbell is that they are competitively priced with wired doorbells.  You can reasonably expect to pay only $5 or $10 more for a similar model.  This is great news for those of fears that anything electronic must mean expensive.

5.  Signal Interference is an issue with cheaper models.

Another problem with some wireless doorbells is signal interference.  Unfortunately, for cheaper wireless doorbell models, they will sometimes go off accidentally when triggered by some other wireless device.  This could be anything from a neighbor’s garage door opener, car alarm, or another wireless doorbell.  The good news is the more moderately priced and higher end wireless doorbells have multiple frequencies which allow you to block out any signal interference. 

Although the wireless doorbell is not perfect, many people have found it to be exactly what they are looking for in terms of performance quality and functionality.

me friend knew something that she couldnt have possibley known?

my friend and i were talking, well were not that close as friends.. more as acquinatences and i mentioned something in the conversation that i was planning to do and she was like' oh yea your going to strip your wall and put victorian gothic wallpaper and get lacey curtains' and i was like 'wtf?, how did you know that (coz i planned that in my head the night before and never told anyone') and she said "oh i just had a dream about it' and i was so shocked that i didnt say anything to anyone all day. but how the hell could she know somehing like that and just casually bring it up like it was nothing... she was just like 'oh yea.. i had a dream about it..like as if it were something that happpens everyday.... HELP ME OUT PLEASE??? whats this called? premonition or is she just like stalking me or something????

Ah the mind is an interesting thing. The human mind possesses the faculties of both a transmitter and a receiver. So it is quite possible that you transmitted the idea to your friend subconsciously and she received it in the same manner. Then when you mentioned it, the picture became whole for her.

How to Install an Iron Wall Candle Holder

Iron wall candle holders have been around for thousands of years. They date back to medieval times where these wall candle holders were used for lighting the hallways of castles. Today these charming pieces of decorative art are used to add a feeling of warmth and tranquility to the room whose wall adorn them.

In order to install these types of candles, you must first know the circumstances of the room in which these will hang. Since this form of indoor wall lighting will use candles for lighting, you must examine the room to make sure that these wall candles will not be placed on the walls near anything that could possibly catch fire while the candles are burning such as surrounding art, curtains, coat racks and anything else that could catch fire.

Keep in mind that candles melt and melted candle wax can get on your walls and floors. To avoid this you may want to have some sort of glass cover around your candle. Glass covers for these candles are available in clear frosted or colors of your choice.

Another good idea is to determine how high on the walls you wish to place these holders. If children are a part of your household, you may want to place these holders above the reach of children.

After you know whether you want or don't want a glass covering your candle and exactly how high you want your holders on your walls, the next thing is to measure each wall for wall candle placement. Depending on how many candles you wish to place on each wall, with a tape measure, measure how high on the wall you want to place them. I suggest that you measure from the floor up the wall and mark the wall at the proper height using a pencil. Go about 12 inches over from your first wall mark and repeat this procedure. Now you have 2 pencil marks on the wall at the same height about 12 inches apart.

Next, measure the width of the wall at the same height you placed the 2 previous height pencil marks and write the width measurement on a piece of paper. Depending on how many of these holders you wish to hang, divide the width of the wall by the number of wall candles you wish to hang. Once you know how far apart each holder will be, then using a tape measure, mark the wall with a pencil dot on each place the wall candle holder will hang.

If you are placing iron wall candle holders along the sides of wall art or a wall mirror, then what you need to do is measure how far from the left and right side of the artwork you wish to place each holder. With your measuring tape go to the left and right side of the wall art (or wall mirror) and measure from the edge of the art outward on both sides. Make sure your outward measurements on both sides are identical. Repeat this step over again on both sides, only this time go about 8 inches either above or below your first marks on both sides of your wall art (or wall mirror).

Now using the 2 pencil dots you have on both sides of your wall art, line your tape measure from the floor up the wall using the 2 pencil dots as a guide for a straight line and mark a pencil dot on the wall exactly how high you wish to hang your candle holder. Repeat this procedure on the other side of the wall art and you will have identical spacing for your candle holders on both sides of the wall art (or wall mirror).

Iron wall candle holders are not light in weight. In order to hang these holders securely you must use what is known as a wall anchor. Remember, never try to hang an iron wall candle holder with a screw directly into drywall or plastered walls. It just won't hold the weight.

Wall anchors are small devices that are placed into the wall at the exact same place a screw would go to hold up these types of wall candles. By using a wall anchor you will be able to hold heavy objects such as heavy wall candles securely to the wall without having to worry about the fixture becoming loose from the wall and eventually falling off the wall.

Wall anchors come in different styles and sizes to accommodate different size screws that will screw into it after the anchor has been placed into the wall. My favorite wall anchor for hanging wall mounted candle holders looks like a short stubby plastic screw with a screw hole in the center.

This anchor is easy to install. All you have to do is drill a small hole (about half the diameter of the anchor) where you want to place the screw to hold your candle on the wall. After you have drilled the small hole, all you have to do is screw in the anchor into the small hole you just drilled until it is flush to the wall. Repeat this procedure for all the screws needed to mount your iron wall candle holder. When you have inserted all the anchors needed to mount your candle to the wall, then you simply hold the wall candle holder in position over the anchors and proceed to screw your holder up to the wall. It is as simple as that and rest assured that your candle holder is on the wall securely.

Iron wall candle holders are works of art that come in many different shapes and sizes. They add comfort to the overall feeling of any room in which they are placed on the wall. With a small amount of effort you can add these to several rooms of your home and enjoy a simple but pleasing touch of art passed on down through the centuries.
