Cherry trim around doors and windows with black picture frames, what color do I paint the walls?

I have no clue right now. My husband and I are a mid 20's couple living on a farm. Our house is an old farm house, which we are leasing, so nothing too wild. I was going to paint dark blue at the bottom and light brown at the top with a chair rail in the middle, but found out one can not be put up in that particular room. In the black picture frames a few will be family pictures and a few will be Iowa Hawkeyes pictures.

"Empire gold" by Sherwin Williams. It will brighten up the room, look great with the cherry wood trim, and the black frames will really stand out against it.

Shoot Pictures Like a Pro With These Tips

Taking pictures is something that everyone loves to do. From high school parties to kosher weddings, documenting memories with film is a cultural phenomenon that won't soon disappear. But if you want to start getting more serious about the photos you capture, there are some things you should know.

1. Lighting: is extremely important. You don't want harsh lighting that will cause dramatic shadows. Instead, you want to aim for soft shadows and easy lighting. Avoid fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. Instead, use daylight bulbs which have a whiter light. Be careful about how you use your flash too, as this can wash out the subject and often the entire photograph.

2. A tripod allows you to use really slow shutter speed, which most hands cannot accommodate, due to unsteadiness. Shutter speed allows your camera to absorb light, which means a brighter photo. A slow shutter speed allows less light and a better photo. 3. The aperture is the diameter of the opening that allows light to enter. This is also a key factor in the lighting of the pictures that you take.

4. Film speed (ISO/ASA): Choosing a faster film speed is not always a good thing. It can make your photos look grainy and insensitive. Using a lower film speed usually produces better photographs. Keep in mind though, that by doing so, you are reducing the amount of light that can enter into your photo, which is why it is crucial to have good lighting to begin with.

5. Macro: This setting is perfect for close-ups of small items and other finery.

6. Light Meter: This feature will lend your photos an average look of gray - 18% to be precise - between black and white. This comes in handy when you're photographing a white on white or black on black picture. A zero reading will produce an average photo, but for white on white, you probably want to increase the amount of light in order to give resolution to your subject.

7. Steady as she goes: don't rush! The best pictures are taken with great patience. You can take a lot of pictures too, which is a huge benefit of digital photography. Photography is a game of odds, the more you shoot, the more chances you have of shooting a great photo. Deleting the bad ones in a series of photographs is easy and when you decide on the best one, remember what you did to shoot the winner.

8. Photoshop is great for editing photos and giving them a professional feel. This in itself is an emerging science, so if you want the best quality, you may want to read or experiment with this program to get a better sense of how it works.

While it's fun to take your own photos, sometimes it's worth it to hire a professional. For example, if you want pictures of a kosher wedding, you may want to hire a Jewish wedding photographer to really heighten the quality of your photos. In other more casual settings, knowing a few important features about your camera can really improve the quality of your photos.

Forecasting the future of technology is anything but an exact science. In late 2006, for instance, my colleagues and I put together an article outlining our predictions for the top 10 tech trends for 2007. My record was, shall we say, mixed.

Halogen Light Bulbs - As Clear As Day

If you are looking for light bulbs with a better energy efficiency than standard incandescent light bulbs then halogen light bulbs may well be the answer. They provide more light output for energy input and can be found in ofiices, homes and vehicles. Halogen lamps were originally developed to combat the problem of the short lifespan of standard bulbs. Halogen lamps are, therefore, well known for their efficiency and durability.

You may hear halogen lamps referred to as tungsten halogen bulbs because of the interaction of tungsten and halogen that produces the light. How does a halogen lamp work you may ask. A clear capsule is filled with a gas such as iodine (a halogen gas) and a tungsten element is sealed inside the capsule with the gas. One of the magical things with a tungsten halogen lamp is that the parts of the tungsten element that evaporate when light is given off are deposited at the hotspots within the capsule which help to prolong the life of the lamp. This means that halogen lamps can be allowed to operate at a higher temperature than incandescent lamps which means they can give a greater brightness and are, therefore, more efficient.

During this chemical reaction the capsule that encloses the bulb becomes extremely hot. This means that conventional glass cannot be used as the manufacturing material for the bulb capsule. Instead fused quartz is generally used as the bulb capsule. There is a useful side effect of using fused quartz and that is that it becomes a source of UV-B light. This in turn leads to halogen lamps being used in some scientific applications as a source of UV-B light. In residential applications additives are put in with the fused quartz to reduce the emission of the UV-B light.

Another thing that has improved the efficiency of halogen bulbs is the addition of a coating that is multi-layered. This allows the full spectrum of visible light to be emitted but reflects infrared light back towards the filament. This means that less energy is required to produce the same light output thus leading to greater efficiency.

Halogen lamps are most prevalent in automotive and domestic applications where a bright, directional light is required. One commonly used halogen bulb is the JDR-100, it is well know for it's long life and cost-effectiveness and is often found in homes and offices. Another popular form of halogen lighting is the Halogen floor lamp from Torchiere This lamp comes supplied with a metal stand and usually have an open bowl top that provides reflected, indirect light. They are very popular with the student fraternity but care must be taken as they have been know to topple over and cause fires if not used in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.

Another well known manufacturer of halogen lamps is Philips. They produce many halogen bulbs known as the bipin variety which are commonly used in under cabinet or task lighting. The varieties MR11 and MR16 are used widely in track lighting and also in many retail lighting applications.
All in all halogen lamps provide an excellent alternative to incandescent bulbs.

Waste Management, Inc. , North America's largest residential recycler, has launched a new program for communities to recycle used compact fluorescent lamps in a safe, environmentally responsible manner along with their residential recycling programs.

Mercury in Fluorescent Light Bulbs May Harm Health

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are in because they’re green but should be taken out immediately when broken because they have quicksilver.

Mercury is the element that enables CFLs to emit white light.  Just like the tube lights of old, they have about five milligrams of quicksilver. This is minute compared to what’s in thermostat switches that have as much as 3,000 milligrams of mercury, which is like having 600 CFLs in one place.  Unlike the case for thermostat switches, thermometers and some automotive parts in which mercury use is being phased out, this cannot be done as yet for CFLs because no better technology is in place.

But why must we be careful about broken CFLs? When the bulb is broken, the mercury is released as a vapor and as a fine powder. This poses a health risk to both humans and animals because mercury is also highly toxic. It has been linked to brain damage in both fetuses and children.  In one documented case, it was learned that severe rashes and weight loss of a 23-month-old baby resulted from its exposure to mercury from a series of 2.4-meter tube lights that broke in the play area. Exposure to mercury is harmful to adults as well, leading to a range of diseases from Alzheimer’s to depression.

Authorities have outlined the steps to take when a light bulb breaks.  First of all, it is important for people and pets to leave the area right away. You must also immediately ventilate the area by opening doors and windows, and prevent circulation of the fumes by turning off the heater.

Wait about 15 minutes before you start cleaning up the area. To do that, make sure to wear gloves because contact with the heavy metal is harmful.  Do not use the vacuum cleaner or a broom to clean up. Instead, use cardboard or stiff paper to pick up the larger fragments. For the smaller fragments, it is best to use duct tape. When this is done, use wet cloth or paper towel to wipe out any trace of the broken bulb.

Care must also be taken with disposal. Use a sealable plastic bag for the broken bulb and then take it out of the house right away as plastics cannot keep mercury fumes in. For best results, use a glass jar with a metal lid.  Although authorities say the health risk is low when fluorescents end up in landfills, it is illegal in many areas to dispose light bulbs with your everyday trash. Your options include municipal waste facilities and some vendors that accept CFLs as part of their recycling program. IKEA takes these in its stores at no cost.
