What determines the maximum size TV that flat-panel TV stand can hold?

Nowadays, most flat panel TVs weigh less than 100 lbs for something 40 inches and below. Yet there are TV stands advertising as "hold up to 27 inch LCD TV" despite claiming can support up to 220 lbs of weight. What gives?

Size and weight, I figure. If you have a small stand, say about 2 feet wide, that can hold 200 pounds, you probably won't want to put a 60" TV that's 4 feet wide even if it's only 120-150 lbs.

Simple Techniques for Mounting Flat Panel Tvs

Flat panel televisions are the newest and hottest technology in televisions, and they offer several advantages over standard tube televisions. One of these advantages is the great increase in picture quality, they also offer sleeker, more modern designs that fit well with any decor. Another great benefit is the fact that they are well designed for wall mounting due to their flat design as well as their light weight.

When you begin to consider the possibility of wall mounting one of the first things that you need to know is what is behind the wall that you plan to cut in to, you don't want to drill or cut into anything in the process of mounting.

Once you've determined that you are safe to mount in your chosen location it is time to look at equipment needs for this job. Most of the flat panels that you can purchase do not come with the mounting hardware necessary for wall mounting, so you will need to purchase it separate from the television. First of all you must find and purchase an appropriate wall-mounting bracket, you should be able to check your owner's manual to determine a suitable bracket for your television. The majority of flat panel TV models are compatible with several brackets that follow the standards set by VESA. The models will have the word VESA, which will then be followed by a number that indicates a millimeter distance between mounting holes on the brackets or the TV. An example of this would be a VESA 75, which means that the four holes on the bracket are separated by 75 mm, there are also some brackets that are rectangular in shape and will have a VESA number like 100/200, which indicates that on two sides of the rectangle the holes are separated by 100mm and on the other two by 200mm.

Next on the list of importance is to ensure that the bracket you select is compatible with the screen size of your flat panel, as well as to double check that the weight capability can hold the weight of your TV. It is also important to consider what you would like the bracket to do, such as swiveling to avoid glare or for a better view from a different seat in the room. You may need to nudge the television slightly after mounting in order to assure that your view is exactly as you would like.

The ideal mounting is one where the TV screen is at about eye level to seating, you should also be aware of glare from light reflection, which will reduce the quality of your view, so be aware of these things during the mounting process.

Another aspect of the mounting is the placement of power and A/V cabling. There are ways of doing this that are quick, and ways that are more labor intensive. You can run your wires inside of the wall if you would like, but this will be the most labor intensive. Other options for wiring that avoid the in-wall labor include the use of paintable cable raceways that you can attach to the wall, or you could consider running cables underneath baseboard or molding if you have more distance to cover. Any of these options will eliminate the ugliness associated with the tangled mess of cables and cords that are often visible between your television and your entertainment cabinet.

Once you've determined the route and method of cabling you will need to figure how much of the wiring you will need. As in any situation it is better to have too much than too little, following is an example:

Running wire from receiver to wall -3 ft

Running horizontally behind the wall -7 ft

Running vertically to TV inside the wall -5 ft

Wire for wall to TV distance (with slight excess) -2 ft

Total of all measures -18 ft, adding a 15% error factor gives you approximately 21ft necessary to do the job properly.

Once you've reached this point you are basically finished, all you have to do from here is fit the two pieces of the mount, the one on the wall and the one on the back of the TV, together and your flat panel TV is successfully wall-mounted.

Last year we had a new dilemma. Our old TV died, and we had to get a new one. In a way, with the new digital conversion to take place this year, this was good. But a new TV was not the dilemma, the dilemma was a new entertainment center. In the past, a new TV did not mean that you had to change the large pieces of furniture in your house, but with the new style flat TV, this time it was necessary.

Now, I love our new TV, and so do all the men in the house who have to carry it. Our old 27†TV must have weighed around 200 lbs., but our new and larger TV weighs less than 50 lbs, so change is good. But the TV would not fit into our entertainment center, so shopping for a new one and finding the perfect one for our family room was our quest.

When it comes to entertainment centers, people have different requirements. The main requirement of my old entertainment center was one that could completely shut away the television. But that was when we lived in our old house and we only had a living room. With a separate family room now, that was not such an important feature. The main feature I was interested in this time was one that saved space. Our old entertainment center was very deep to close away the TV and took up a lot of floor space. We definitely did not need this anymore, so I was happy for the extra room. Our family room is narrow, so I only wanted something to hold the TV and the extra components.

Shopping for entertainment centers was fun, and the variety was larger than I expected. The new style TV has spawned a new style of entertainment centers, and old styles are available also. The main styles available included:

• Entertainment wall units, these are the style that take up an entire wall and often include cupboards and shelves, which are great for books or display.
• Entertainment armoires, which is the style I previously owned. You can close off the TV with doors.
• TV lift cabinets, a style of entertainment centers that I was not familiar with, but very cool! These are only for the new TV designs. The back 9 or 10 inches of the cabinet top opens and the TV lifts up from down below. Since the TV takes up so little room, the cupboards below are fully functional for storage.
• Corner entertainment centers.
• Last buy not least, basic TV stands. TV stand styles have changed drastically with flat panel televisions, and they are often very modern and chic. Most have plenty of room for components on shelves underneath, and many offer matching shelving or audio towers.

For our needs, the two best style of entertainment centers were the basic TV stand and the TV lift cabinet. Some of the lift cabinets were very nice, they looked like fine pieces of furniture and were offered in many styles. If our TV was in the living room, I would definitely go for this option. But we settled for a basic pine TV stand. It is the perfect size, does not take up any excess room, and has enough shelves underneath for components. It is also only about half the width of our previous entertainment center, so the room now seems bigger. Yes, we are very happy with our new entertainment center and TV, plus, it is nice not to worry about getting a digital conversion box!

A Corner Entertainment Center: More Styles Than You Can Imagine!

I was recently shopping around for a corner entertainment center, and was surprised by the selection available. I had only seen small units before that your TV sits upon, with maybe a few shelves beneath for the dvd player, game units etc. But what I found was a lot more impressive, units ranging from full furniture pieces to the smaller units I was familiar with and everything in between. Lets take a look at some of the available styles.

One of the first units I saw, which is the type I like on a regular wall unit, is an armoire. I had no idea that you could get a corner entertainment center in an armoire style! I love being able to close off the tv, especially when it is kept in the living room. Because of the corner style, the doors fold back (versus sliding) to reveal the TV and other components. On many armoire units, the TV is kept in a cabinet on top and the components are on the bottom, so those units had four doors. Other units had just two full length doors. This is a great option if you only have room to put the TV in the corner and you are looking for a nice piece of furniture.

You can also find a full furniture piece that is not an armoire, but still a piece of case furniture with shelves, including one that goes above the television. The TV sits in the unit. The bottom part has shelves, drawers or cabinets for various components. One unit I saw that was specifically designed for the new flat panel TV style was unique because it required the TV to be connected to hang on the back wall of the unit.

Perhaps you just like the idea of having the TV in the corner, but have plenty of room. If that is the case, then you can find a corner entertainment center similar to either style above, but it also has matching shelf units on both sides to extend along the walls.

The basic "TV stand" also does not meet the convention of small stands in a corner entertainment center, the type you purchase at a massive discount store. There are some really nice stands that are full pieces of furniture in some really nice styles. One I saw that I particularly liked was made of dark wood, I believe walnut, with glass doors in the middle (for components) and three narrow drawers down both sides of the middle compartment. Some of the styles I have seen include Quaker, Mission and Dutch Modern. Others I have seen have the more modern look, with a black or silver finish and glass shelves. Of course, the stands come in varying widths, depending on what you need.

And, of course, you can just get the basic TV stand I originally thought of when I thought of a corner entertainment center. Though even some of these are better than I remember. I saw one that was taller than usual, and was labeled as being "bedroom-height". Clever, I thought, because you do want your TV up higher when watching from bed (plus, it helps keep your dresser free for other things!). I also found some metal and wood ones that had a shelf above the TV for knick-knacks in which the metal came in different colors, such as pink, purple and blue. This is great if you let you children have a TV in their room.

So, now I have to choose,what style corner entertainment center is best for me? I just don’t know, I guess I will have to ask my husband for his opinion too!

Differences Between Plasma and LCD Tvs

Plasma and LCD panels may look similar, but the flat screen and thin profile is where the similarities end. There are a number of significant differences between the two.

Let us understand the meaning of Plasma and LCD Televisions in order to better understand the differences between them.

LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY TELEVISION (LCD TV).

LCD TV uses LCD technology for its visual output. Liquid Crystal Display or LCD is a thin, flat display device made up of a number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed infront of a light source or reflector. In color LCDs each individual pixel is divided into three cells or subpixels which are colored red, green and blue. Each cell or subpixel can be controlled independently to yield thousands or millions of possible colors for each pixel. LCD TVs can make for excellent High Definition TV viewing.

LCD TVs - The Good

1. Excellent Color Reproduction - LCDs can display millions of colors accurately.

2. Multi-functional - LCD TVs have a plethora of connectivity options. They typically include inputs for composite video, S-video, High Definition Multimedia Interface(HDMI) and PC In.

3. No Burn In - With LCDs there is no problem of Burn In. Some TVs that rely on phosphors such as Plasmas and CRTs can experience Burn In where ghost images are permanently burned into the screen.

4. Inherently Progressive - LCDs use millions of tiny transistors that can be individually controlled by the "brains" inside the display. So LCDs can easily handle progressive-scan sources.

5. High Resolution - LCDs can display High Definition content with resolutions of 1366x768. The highest resolution achieved in a LCD is 1920x1080. 1080p is also called Full High Definition whereas 720p is called High Definition.

LCD TVs - The Bad

1. Expensive - LCD TVs are great but they are not cheap. LCD TVs cost more per inch than plasmas.

2. Poor Reproduction of Blacks - LCD TVs tend to produce grays, not blacks.

3. Limited Viewing Angle - LCDs have typically poor viewing angle. However, there has been a drastic improvement on this front with latest LCDs achieving a wide viewing angle of 178 degrees.

4. Slow Response Time - LCDs have longer response times than Plasmas.For example, when moving the mouse too fast on an LCD, multiple cursors can sometimes be seen. This is also known as Ghosting Effect. But this problem seems to have been addressed with the latest LCD TVs with response times as low as 8ms.

5. Low Contrast Ratio - Contrast Ratio is the ratio of the intensity of the brightest bright to the darkest dark. LCDs comparitively have lower Contrast Ratios than Plasmas.

PLASMA TELEVISION

A plasma screen contains literally millions of gas-filled cells (each one acting as a single image pixel) trapped between two pieces of glass. An electrical grid zaps these cells and causes the gases to ionize (and ionized gas is plasma - hence the name). The ionized gases, in turn, cause a layer of phosphor on the viewer's side layer of glass to light up. Plasma TVs combine a thin, compact chassis with a truly large screen size. Despite their compact dimensions Plasmas are available in 42+, 50+ and even 60+ inch sizes.

Plasma TVs - The Good

1. Excellent Brightness - Plasma TVs don't rely on a light bulb shining through or reflecting off of something (as an LCD or DLP system does). Plasma brightness is even better than CRT's in some ways because the picture is evenly bright across the entire screen.

2. High Resolution - The finest plasma TVs have such high resolutions (and such smooth images) that they look life like.

3. Progressive in nature - All the pixels on the screen light up simultaneously. You can have progressive HDTV sources (such as 720p) and non-HDTV sources (such as progressive-scan DVD players) displayed to full advantage on a plasma HDTV.

4. Wide Viewing Angle - Plasmas have a wider viewing angle as compared to LCDs. Plasma displays have a good picture even when you're sitting "off axis" (not perpendicular to the screen surface). This is a huge benefit for smaller rooms, where viewers may sit relatively far off to the sides of the screen, at wider angles.

Plasma TVs - The Bad

1. Burn-In - Plasmas rely on phosphor to display video. This can cause Burn-In where ghost images are permanently burned into the screen.

2. Short Lifespan - Another phenomenon of any phosphor-based display system is that eventually the phosphors "wear out" or lose their brightness. This is a subtle and slow process, but it inevitably happens.

3. Less-than-perfect color reproduction - Although plasma displays can produce a breathtaking array of colors, a lot of sets have the unfortunate tendency to make red colors look more orange than true red.

4. Poor reproduction of black - Plasma TVs fall short in the realm of reproducing black images. Most plasmas do slightly better job than LCD TVs at black reproduction, but they fall short of CRTs and some projection systems.

Other factors such as pricing, weight, power usage, high altitude performance and transportation are other considerations that apply on a person to person basis. So I will briefly just state the overall differences in these areas.

Pricing: Plasma TVs are still significantly less expensive than LCD in sizes over 32".

Weight: LCD TVs are considerably lighter and as such easier to mount and install. So
