Leather Parsons

Do they make leather chair covers?

We have a dining room set with black leather parson's chairs. My child bit one of the chairs and made a hole. We tried the leather repair kit and that didnt really work. Do they just make the chair cover? I mean the chair right now has a zipper like it comes off. I cant find any sites that sell just the covers and not the whole chair.

Parsons chair slipcovers are sold all over. I've never seen leather. Who manufactured them? If you can find out, possibly they could help.

Secrets Of Your Essential Space

Everyone needs to step back from the world, diffuse, rest, recharge, create and listen to themselves.   Everyone needs a haven for just a short time.  The following steps will enable you to create a space where you can go and listen to yourself.  This is an ongoing process.  You are always changing and so should your personal space.

First of all, you DO need your own place.  Everyone needs to “take a breather” from life’s demands and stresses.  You need to get away, catch your breath and concentrate on a better you.

Next, you need to decide where that space will be.  It can be anywhere from a whole building to a tiny closet, or the corner of a room.  Some people, artists for example, will use a huge warehouse to create.  Others have a corner of a room where they can retreat into their own thoughts and meditate.  For people who love to read, a chaise lounge is the perfect place to be cushioned from outside demands.

How large your essential space is will be determined by your needs and desires.  It can serve more than one function.  Your needs are determined by what it takes for you to function efficiently.  Your desires are what make you feel good, relaxed, happy, etc.  Budget, of course, has a way of setting limits upon us.  However, the stricter the budget, the more creative the solution.  It’s easier to first discard what you don’t want; then you can concentrate on what you do want.  What is it you really like to do?  Do you like to hike?  Shop? Travel? Read?  This is your guide.  If hiking is your “thing”, then a natural refuge that reflects the outdoors – ground cover, trees, sky, fresh air, sounds of wind, water, etc.  A shopper’s retreat would showcase unique items to please the eye.  A traveler’s retreat is covered with maps, momentos and pictures.  A library is a perfect reader’s haven.

What do you want to be able to do in your sanctuary?  Sleep, cook, read, listen to music, meditate?  What tools do you need to make it possible for you to function the way you want?  You need a plan, a goal.  Make a list of all the things you want and then start eliminating. It’s very easy to overdo.  The old adage, “less is more” is true.  If you dam a river, the water cannot run to the ocean.  You need to remove the dams so the river can freely flow.  Cleaning out clutter, excess items, will not only free up your physical space but will also keep clutter from clogging your thinking.  Keeping your space organized and simple will enable you to focus on your priorities.

Everyone has a favorite color or group of colors.  For example, red rev’s you up and  muted green calms you down.  Do you want to be rev’d or calmed?  Do you need to recharge yourself like the Energizer Bunny or do you need to diffuse your stress and become a soft pillow?  Any color can be used.  Bright colors will energize you and muted colors will relax you.  Your colors may be a memory of childhood, a beautiful place, a photograph, or a cherished object.  Play with paint chips until you smile.  You have just discovered your colors.

What style are you?  Are you a modern, sleek, spare person?  Do you favor styles from the past or other places?  Are you eclectic?  Very few people are style purists.  If you are, go for it!  However, if you love Moroccan poufs, Parsons tables and leather sofas, that’s great!  This is your space and no one should tell you that you’re “out of style”.  It’s just a matter of what you love.  Do you really love that Moroccan pouf or is it just cute or the right price.  Remember, no clutter, just what you love.

So far we’ve talked about what you see, color and style.  What about the other senses – feeling, hearing, smelling?  Texture and style often go together.  Texture also affects function.  If you need someplace to write, you need a good writing surface.  That fabulous desk you saw may not have a good writing surface.  So you either look for another desk that you also love or put something on the surface that will properly accommodate your writing.  You need a variety of textures:  soft, hard, smooth, rough.  All the same texture is boring.  Variety energizes your senses.

Do you like total quiet, music, the sound of water or the wind?  What puts you in the mood to listen to yourself?  It doesn’t have to be the same all the time.  On a cold, windy, rainy night, a warm crackling fire is so comforting.  On a hot day, the sound of water soothes. Do you need to be alert so you can focus or can you allow your mind to wander.   Sound does that.

Your essential space should function efficiently.  Only keep what speaks to you.  If you aren’t sure, try it for a while.  The world is constantly changing; we are constantly changing.  It’s okay to change things around, to eliminate, to add.  When something no longer works for you, get rid of it.  Something else will find you.  When you have created your essential space, you will have a homeport, from which to greet the world with a better you.
