HID Headlamps, Better than Halogen Bulbs

HID is an acronym that stands for high-intensity discharge, which is a technical term for the electrical arc which produces light. Formally known as gas-discharge burners, these lamps produce far greater light for a given power lever than the typical tungsten-halogen bulbs can. These type of light sources are extremely popular in the world of automotive upgrades.

Automotive HID lamps are usually referred to as “xenon headlamps.” These lamps are actually metal halide lamps which contain xenon gas. This type of gas allows the lamp to produce a minimalist amount of light upon immediate start up, but accelerates the lamp’s run-up time very quickly. Argon, which was typically used in street lights and other stationary metal halide lamp applications, would take several minutes to reach their full output. The light that is emitted from HID lights has a distinct bluish tint to it. This cool effect definitely contributes to the light’s attractiveness.

HID lights offer a substantially greater luminance and luminous flux than halogen bulbs can. They produce more light using less power. This means that less fuel is consumed and there is a lower level of CO2 emission. Not only do they save energy and fuel, they also provide drivers with more safety. Studies have proven that drivers tend to react to the obstacles of the road much faster and with more accuracy when good HID headlamps are installed as opposed to driving with halogen bulbs.

The average life of an HID lamp is 2000 hours. That is well worth a two dollar pay increase when you compare it with the 450 to 800 hours of a halogen lamp. Overall, HID Lights can make any car look cooler, become more energy efficient, and increase overall MPG.
